Description

A classic French butter cake that is rich in flavor and has a soft, buttery texture, making it a perfect dessert for family gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. In another bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add this mixture to the creamed butter and sugar, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Serve plain or with a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

For variations, consider adding lemon or orange zest, or incorporating chocolate chips or nuts. Store the cake at room temperature for a couple of days or in the freezer for up to three months.
