Description

A heartwarming recipe for homemade Amish white bread that brings families together with its delightful texture and sweet flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil/butter)
  • 5 1/2 cups bread flour (adjust as necessary)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, warm milk, and sugar. Stir until dissolved.
  2. Sprinkle yeast over the liquid and let it stand for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  3. Add salt, oil, and 2 cups of flour to the mixture. Stir until combined.
  4. Gradually incorporate remaining flour until a dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape it into a loaf.
  8. Place the loaf in a greased bread pan, cover again, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Brush the top with melted butter once it comes out of the oven.

Notes

Use fresh yeast and ensure water and milk are at the correct temperature for best results. Adjust flour as necessary depending on humidity.
