Ingredients
- – 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used, can also be sliced)
- – 2 tbsp granulated sugar (30 ml)
- – 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon (3.75 ml)
- – 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice (7.5 ml)
- – 1 cup light brown sugar (240 g)
- – 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats (75 g) (quick oats can be used, but it may have a slightly different texture)
- – 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (90 g)
- – 1 tsp ground cinnamon (5 ml)
- – pinch of salt
- – 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes (115 g)
Instructions
- Warm up your oven to 350°F. Grease an 8×8 baking dish with butter or coat it with a non-stick spray. Set it aside for later.
- Combine the apple pieces, granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice in a bowl. Mix them well and then place this mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- In another bowl, combine the ingredients for the topping: brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and the small cubes of cold butter.
- Work the butter into the oat mixture using a pastry cutter, twisting it slightly downwards until you achieve a consistency that looks like small crumbs. Alternatively, you can use two forks or your hands to blend the butter into the mix.
- Evenly distribute the topping over the apples in the baking dish, pressing it down gently to level it out. Place in the oven and bake for 40-50 minutes until it turns golden brown and starts to bubble.
- Serve it warm. Enjoy it with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Notes
- Try using sliced apples for a different texture in the dish.
- Use salted butter and reduce salt in topping to balance flavors.
- Experiment with quick oats for varied crisp texture.
