Ingredients

  • 1 clove garlic (5 g)
  • 1 yellow onion (150 g)
  • 2 bell peppers (300 g)
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil (15 ml)
  • 1/2 lb. ground beef (225 g)
  • 15 oz. can diced tomatoes (425 g)
  • 1 cup long grain white rice (uncooked) (185 g)
  • 1 tsp dried basil (5 g)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano (5 g)
  • 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper (1 g)
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth (360 ml)
  • 18 oz. can tomato sauce (510 g)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (5 ml)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella (115 g)
  • 1 Tbsp chopped parsley (optional garnish) (15 ml)

Instructions

  1. Chop the garlic finely and cut the onion and bell pepper into small pieces.
  2. Put olive oil and the ground beef in a large pan. Cook the meat on medium heat until it is completely browned.
  3. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, minced garlic, basil, oregano, and cracked black pepper to the pan. Stir and cook until the onions become tender.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes with their juice, the uncooked rice, and the beef broth to the pan. Stir briefly to mix everything together.
  5. Cover the pan with a lid and increase the heat to medium-high. Let the broth reach a rolling boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Afterward, turn off the heat and let it sit, still covered, for an additional five minutes.
  6. While the mixture is simmering, mix the tomato sauce with the Worcestershire sauce in a separate bowl.
  7. After the rice has rested for five minutes, remove the lid and use a fork to gently mix and fluff the contents, ensuring the ingredients are well combined (the peppers and tomatoes might rise to the top during simmering).
  8. Pour the blended tomato sauce over the rice mixture, then sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese on top. Cover the pan again and allow the cheese to melt from the residual heat. Once melted, add a sprinkle of chopped parsley for garnish and serve.

Notes

  • Brown the ground beef thoroughly for optimal flavor and texture.
  • Allow the rice mixture to sit after simmering to enhance the flavors.
  • Incorporating Worcestershire sauce into the tomato sauce adds complexity to the dish.
