Ingredients
- 8 oz elbow macaroni
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 cups whole milk
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add elbow macaroni and cook until al dente, about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until bubbly. Whisk in flour until smooth and cook for about 1 minute.
- Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly until the mixture thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
- Mix the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until well coated.
- Transfer to a greased baking dish, top with panko bread crumbs, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
For a creamier texture, consider mixing in different cheeses like fontina or mozzarella. Use freshly shredded cheese for the best melting quality.
