Description

Juicy beef skewers marinated in a savory teriyaki glaze, perfect for barbecue gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 12 wooden or bamboo skewers (soaked in water for 1 hour)
  • 2 tablespoons white sesame seeds (toasted)
  • 2 pounds boneless beef sirloin roast (sliced 1 cm thick against the grain)
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons garlic (pressed)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice or fresh crushed pineapples

Instructions

  1. Soak the wooden skewers in water for one hour.
  2. Toast the white sesame seeds in a skillet over medium-high heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Set aside to cool.
  3. Grind the cooled sesame seeds in a mortar or a zip-top plastic bag with a rolling pin.
  4. Pat the beef roast dry with paper towels and trim away any connective tissue.
  5. Slice the roast into approximately 2 x 3 inch pieces, 1 cm thick.
  6. In another bowl, whisk together the dark brown sugar, soy sauce, pressed garlic, sesame oil, mirin, hoisin sauce, and pineapple juice.
  7. Pour the marinade over the sliced beef, mix well, and refrigerate for one hour.
  8. Skewer about six slices of beef on each stick and place skewers on a tray lined with aluminum foil.
  9. Bring excess marinade to a boil in a saucepan until thickened for basting while grilling.
  10. Grill skewers on medium-high heat (approximately 400°F) for 3 to 4 minutes per side until cooked and sticky.

Notes

For additional flavor, baste with reserved marinade during the last few minutes of grilling.
