Description

Deliciously sweet and soft Hawaiian bread rolls that evoke nostalgia and warmth, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
  • 3 teaspoons instant yeast
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 whole eggs (room temperature)
  • ½ cup pineapple juice
  • ½ cup whole milk (lukewarm)
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 whole egg (for egg wash)
  • 2 teaspoons milk (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In your stand mixer, combine the 4 cups of flour, ¾ cup of sugar, 3 teaspoons of instant yeast, and ¾ teaspoon of salt. Whisk it until just combined.
  2. Create a well in the center of your dry ingredients and add the 2 whole eggs, ½ cup of pineapple juice, ½ cup of lukewarm milk, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
  3. Using the hook attachment, knead these ingredients on low speed for about 5 minutes. Gradually add in the 6 tablespoons of softened butter while mixing. Mix for an additional 2 minutes until the dough comes together.
  4. Transfer the dough into a greased bowl. Cover it with cling wrap and allow it to proof for 1½ to 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a dusted surface. Divide it into 15 equal-sized balls. Line these balls into a greased 9 x 13 non-stick baking dish, arranged in 5 rows of 3.
  6. Cover the rolls and let them rest for at least another hour until they double in size.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare the egg wash by whisking together 1 whole egg with 2 teaspoons of milk. Brush the dough balls with this egg wash.
  8. Place the baking tray on the middle rack of the oven, baking for 22-25 minutes or until the tops turn a beautiful golden brown.
  9. Once out of the oven, brush the rolls with the melted butter. Allow them to cool for 5-7 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for better blending. Experiment with flavors by adding shredded coconut or cinnamon.
