A hearty and flavorful dish of tender cube steaks in savory gravy, perfect over mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
- 8 cube steaks
- Flour (for dredging)
- Black pepper (for seasoning)
- Garlic powder (for seasoning)
- Onion powder (for seasoning)
- Seasoning salt (like Lawry’s or Morton’s)
- 4 tbsp bacon grease (for frying)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 cups water
- 6 tbsp brown gravy mix
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 2 tsp black pepper
- Salt (to taste)
Instructions
- Warm the bacon grease in a skillet over medium heat.
- Season your cube steaks with seasoning salt on both sides.
- In a rimmed container, mix together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper for dredging.
- Dredge each cube steak generously in the flour mixture.
- Fry each steak in the skillet for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove the steak from the skillet and place them in the slow cooker.
- Pour any leftover grease and food bits from the skillet into the slow cooker for added flavor.
- In a mixing bowl, combine hot water, beef broth, brown gravy mix, Worcestershire sauce, and remaining spices. Stir well to blend.
- Pour this mixture over the cube steaks until they are barely covered.
- Cook on low for 5-6 hours or high for 2-3 hours until tender and gravy has thickened.
- Serve over mashed potatoes.
Notes
For thicker gravy, consider adding a cornstarch slurry a few minutes before serving.
