Description

A hearty and flavorful dish of tender cube steaks in savory gravy, perfect over mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 8 cube steaks
  • Flour (for dredging)
  • Black pepper (for seasoning)
  • Garlic powder (for seasoning)
  • Onion powder (for seasoning)
  • Seasoning salt (like Lawry’s or Morton’s)
  • 4 tbsp bacon grease (for frying)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 tbsp brown gravy mix
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp black pepper
  • Salt (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Warm the bacon grease in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Season your cube steaks with seasoning salt on both sides.
  3. In a rimmed container, mix together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper for dredging.
  4. Dredge each cube steak generously in the flour mixture.
  5. Fry each steak in the skillet for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Remove the steak from the skillet and place them in the slow cooker.
  7. Pour any leftover grease and food bits from the skillet into the slow cooker for added flavor.
  8. In a mixing bowl, combine hot water, beef broth, brown gravy mix, Worcestershire sauce, and remaining spices. Stir well to blend.
  9. Pour this mixture over the cube steaks until they are barely covered.
  10. Cook on low for 5-6 hours or high for 2-3 hours until tender and gravy has thickened.
  11. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Notes

For thicker gravy, consider adding a cornstarch slurry a few minutes before serving.
