Description

Ingredients

  • ½ lb ground breakfast sausage
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1¾ cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese


Instructions

  1. Brown the ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat until golden.
  2. Drain excess grease and let the sausage cool slightly.
  3. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  4. Remove the hot baking dish from the oven and let the butter melt.
  5. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  6. Stir the buttermilk into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  7. Fold in the cooked sausage and grated cheese until well incorporated.
  8. Pour the batter into the melted butter and spread it evenly.
  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and puffed.
  10. Let them rest for 5 minutes before cutting into squares.
