Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (8 Tbsp; 113g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) salt
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
- 2 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced (1/4 inch thick)*
- 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) all-purpose flour
- 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon (1 ml) ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup (43g) old-fashioned whole rolled oats
- 1/3 cup (70g) packed light or dark brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup (31g) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
- 1/4 cup (4 Tbsp; 56g) vegetable oil, cold and cubed
- homemade salted caramel or store-bought caramel sauce
Instructions
- Heat your oven to 300°F (149°C). Prepare an 8-inch square baking dish by covering the bottom and sides with parchment paper, ensuring there is enough extra on all sides. Put it aside for now.
- Prepare the base: In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix in the flour until fully incorporated. Spread this mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. Put it in the oven for 15 minutes, then take it out. (While the base is baking, you can work on the apple layer and crumb topping.)
- Prepare the apple layer: In a large bowl, mix the apple slices with flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until they are evenly coated. Set this mixture aside.
- Prepare the crumb topping: In a medium bowl, blend the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour. Use a pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands to mix in the cold butter until it forms small, crumbly pieces. Set this aside as well.
- Increase the oven temperature to 350°F (177°C). Arrange the apple mixture evenly over the warm base. It may seem like there are too many apples, so pack them tightly and press them down to fit. Sprinkle the crumb topping over the apples and bake for 30–35 minutes or until the topping is golden brown.
- Take the dish out of the oven and let it cool at room temperature for at least 20 minutes. Then, refrigerate it for at least 2 hours or overnight. Use the parchment overhang to lift the dessert out of the baking dish and cut it into bars. You can make 16 smaller bars or 12 larger ones. Once cut, drizzle salted caramel sauce over each bar. These bars can be enjoyed warm, at room temperature, or chilled.
Notes
- Pack the apple slices tightly on the base to ensure a delicious apple layer.
- Refrigerate the bars for at least 2 hours before cutting to allow them to set properly.
- Drizzle each bar with homemade salted caramel sauce for an extra indulgent touch.
