Ingredients

  • – 4 Large Boiled Potatoes (about 800g)
  • – 1/2 Cup Grated Cheese (about 50g)
  • – 1/2 Tsp (3 ml) Chilli Flakes
  • – 1/2 Tsp (3 ml) Dry Parsley
  • – 1/2 Tsp (3 ml) Dry Thyme
  • – 1/2 Tsp (3 ml) Pepper Powder
  • – 1/2 Tsp (3 ml) Garlic Powder
  • – 1 Cup (240 ml) Vegetable Oil
  • – 1/2 Cup (120 ml) Bread Crumbs
  • – 1/4 Cup Water (60ml)
  • – 2 Tbsp (30 ml) All-Purpose Flour

Instructions

  1. Peel and halve the large potatoes.
  2. Fill a big pot with cold water, add a teaspoon of salt, and the potato halves. Boil until they’re almost fully cooked.
  3. Take them off the heat and place the potatoes in a bowl of cold water.
  4. Once cooled to room temperature, either grate or mash the potatoes using a grater or masher.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated potatoes, cheese, chili flakes, dried parsley, dried thyme, pepper, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt.
  6. Stir everything together thoroughly with a spatula or spoon. If the mixture feels too wet, incorporate some all-purpose flour.
  7. In a separate small bowl, mix the all-purpose flour with water to form a smooth paste.
  8. Place bread crumbs in another bowl and set aside.
  9. Scoop up a tablespoon of the potato mixture and shape it into balls using your hands.
  10. Submerge each ball in the flour mixture, ensuring it’s evenly coated, then roll it in the breadcrumbs until fully covered.
  11. Continue this process until all the potato mixture is used up.
  12. Warm a medium-sized pan over medium heat and pour in the vegetable oil.
  13. As the oil heats, gently lower the potato balls into it one by one, avoiding overcrowding by adding just a few at a time.
  14. Turn them occasionally to ensure even frying until they turn golden brown.
  15. Use a slotted spoon to lift the balls from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  16. Savor the crispy and cheesy bites while they are still hot.

Notes

  • Try baking the potato balls in the oven for a healthier option instead of frying in vegetable oil.
  • Experiment with different cheeses like cheddar or mozzarella to vary the dish’s flavor profile.
  • Enhance taste and presentation by adding chopped parsley or basil before serving, and pair with marinara sauce or sour cream for dipping.
