Description
A classic comfort food, the patty melt combines juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese between toasted rye bread.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat and sauté sliced onions until golden brown.
- Season ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into patties.
- Cook patties in the skillet until desired doneness.
- On a slice of rye bread, place a cooked patty, top with sautéed onions and a slice of Swiss cheese.
- Top with another slice of rye bread and press down gently.
- Grill the sandwich in the skillet until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Slice in half and serve hot.
Notes
For added flavor, mix Worcestershire sauce into the ground beef before forming patties. Experiment with different cheeses or toppings like sautéed mushrooms or jalapeños.
