Description

A delightful blend of custard-soaked French bread topped with a caramelized sugar crust, perfect for special occasions or cozy breakfasts.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced 1-inch thick
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Generously butter a 9×13-inch baking dish and arrange the French bread slices in a single layer.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  3. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices and gently press the bread into the custard.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap, dot the bread with butter, and sprinkle with sugar.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes until puffed and golden.
  7. Let cool slightly, then sprinkle with sugar and caramelize using a kitchen torch or broiler.
  8. Serve with warm maple syrup.

Notes

Using day-old French bread or brioche enhances absorption. A sprinkle of sea salt on the caramelized sugar elevates the flavor.
