Description

A delightful homemade bread infused with Italian herbs and topped with melted cheese, perfect as a side dish or standalone delight.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1¾ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dried Italian herbs (like basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large mixing bowl; let rest for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour, salt, dried Italian herbs, mozzarella, and Parmesan until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, until doubled.
  5. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf or place in a greased pan, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a shallow pan of water at the bottom.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  8. Cool on a wire rack before slicing and enjoy.

Notes

For a crispy crust, ensure steam is created in the oven.
