Ingredients
- – 8 cups (1.9 kg) apples, cored, peeled, and sliced
- – 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Lemon juice
- – 3/4 cup (150 g) White sugar
- – 1/4 cup (50 g) Brown sugar
- – 1/4 cup (30 g) Flour
- – 1 teaspoon (5 ml) Cinnamon
- – 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) Nutmeg
- – 1 cup (120 g) Flour
- – 1/2 cup (100 g) Brown sugar
- – 1/2 cup (100 g) White sugar
- – 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Cinnamon
- – 1/2 cup (113 g) Beef tallow, cold
Instructions
- Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to preheat. Roll out your pastry and lay it in the bottom of a pie dish, then set it aside.
- In a bowl, combine all the filling ingredients, stirring until the apple slices are evenly coated. Let the apple mixture rest for a minimum of 5 minutes before placing it into the crust.
- While waiting, take another bowl and use a fork to mix all the topping ingredients until they form a crumbly texture. You can use your hands to pinch the cold beef tallow into smaller bits, ensuring they are well mixed with the dry components.
- Add the apple mixture to the crust, then sprinkle the topping mixture over it. Bake for 50-55 minutes. Enjoy warm, paired with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Adjust the sweetness of the filling by tasting the apples beforehand and adjusting the amount of white and brown sugar accordingly.
- For a more flavorful crust, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the pastry dough before rolling it out.
- Experiment with different types of apples to find the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness for your apple pie filling.
