Description

A comforting hamburger potato casserole that combines seasoned beef, tender potatoes, and gooey cheese, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef (85/15 mix)
  • 4 medium russet or Yukon gold potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Garlic powder (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat for 7 to 10 minutes until browned; drain excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent.
  4. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and garlic powder; stir for another minute.
  5. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
  6. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and layer half of the potato slices, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper.
  7. Spread the beef-onion mixture evenly over the potato layer.
  8. Top with the remaining potato slices.
  9. Whisk together the milk and melted butter; pour over the casserole.
  10. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly on top.
  11. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  12. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  13. Check for doneness by poking a fork into the potatoes; they should be tender.
  14. Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Consider adding chopped herbs like parsley or thyme for freshness. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
