Description
A comforting dish of homemade biscuits smothered in rich sausage gravy, perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground sausage
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 ½ cups milk
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp sage
- ¼ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- A pinch of salt
- 12 homemade buttermilk biscuits
Instructions
- Begin by browning the ground sausage in your skillet over medium heat for about 10 minutes until no pink remains.
- Add the unsalted butter and stir until it melts completely.
- Sprinkle the flour into the skillet and mix it with the sausage until the flour dissolves.
- Gradually pour in the milk while constantly stirring. Raise the heat to bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
- Reduce the heat and whisk continuously until the gravy starts to thicken, about 5 minutes.
- Incorporate your spices and taste to adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Serve the rich gravy over warm biscuits and enjoy.
Notes
For a brighter flavor, add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary. If the gravy is too thick, add more milk; if too thin, cook longer or add more flour mixed with cold water.
