Description

A comforting dish of homemade biscuits smothered in rich sausage gravy, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground sausage
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 ½ cups milk
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp sage
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 12 homemade buttermilk biscuits

Instructions

  1. Begin by browning the ground sausage in your skillet over medium heat for about 10 minutes until no pink remains.
  2. Add the unsalted butter and stir until it melts completely.
  3. Sprinkle the flour into the skillet and mix it with the sausage until the flour dissolves.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk while constantly stirring. Raise the heat to bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  5. Reduce the heat and whisk continuously until the gravy starts to thicken, about 5 minutes.
  6. Incorporate your spices and taste to adjust seasoning if necessary.
  7. Serve the rich gravy over warm biscuits and enjoy.

Notes

For a brighter flavor, add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary. If the gravy is too thick, add more milk; if too thin, cook longer or add more flour mixed with cold water.
