Description
A classic Philly cheesesteak featuring tender beef, melted provolone cheese, and sautéed veggies for a heartwarming meal.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds top sirloin steak or ribeye, trimmed and sliced very thin
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
- 8 slices of mild provolone cheese
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 4 hoagie rolls, sliced through
- 4 oz sliced mushrooms
- 1 large yellow onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
- 2 teaspoons coarse Kosher salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
Instructions
- Start by placing the steak in the freezer for 30 minutes. This will help achieve a firm texture for slicing into thin strips.
- Trim any excess fat and season the steak with coarse Kosher salt and black pepper before setting it aside.
- Slice the onions and set them aside.
- Take a serrated knife and carefully split the hoagie rolls lengthwise about ¾ of the way through.
- In a bowl, mix the softened butter with minced garlic.
- Spread this flavorful garlic butter on the cut sides of the hoagie rolls, then toast them on a griddle or skillet over medium heat until they achieve a golden-brown hue. Set those toasted rolls aside for later.
- Next, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Sauté the onions for 8-10 minutes until they become slightly caramelized, enhancing their natural sweetness.
- Once done, transfer the onions into a bowl and set them aside.
- Now increase the heat to medium-high and add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pan.
- When hot, evenly lay the thinly sliced steak in the skillet.
- Allow it to cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes to create a nice sear.
- Flip the meat to cook the other side, and then stir in the sautéed onions, combining the flavors.
- Use a spatula to divide the meat and onion mixture into 4 portions.
- Top each portion with 2 slices of provolone cheese, allowing the cheese to melt as you turn off the heat.
- Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the cut sides of your toasted hoagie rolls.
- Place a roll over a portion of the melted meat, onions, and cheese.
- Use a spatula to flip the meat onto the roll, completing your Philly cheesesteak.
- Serve promptly, and get ready to savor every bite!
Notes
For a vegetarian alternative, replace the steak with sautéed mushrooms or marinated tofu.
