Ingredients
- 6 apples (about 900g)
- 3 cups of sugar, divided (600g)
- 4 eggs
- 3 tbsp of melted butter (45ml)
- 1 cup of milk (240ml)
- 1 tbsp of vanilla extract (15ml)
- 1 cup of flour (120g)
- 1 pinch of salt
- 2 tsp (10 ml) of baking powder
- 6 scoops of vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- Using a sharp knife, carve small triangular sections from the tops of the apples to create an eight-point star shape as demonstrated in the video. Next, slice off the upper inch of the apple where the star design is, and cut out small triangles from the bottom of the star slice, mirroring the same pattern. In a saucepan, gradually heat 2 1/2 cups of sugar to create caramel, incorporating the sugar in increments of 1/2 cup at a time. Once the sugar reaches a rich amber hue, pour in 1 cup of boiling water. Take the pan off the heat and allow the mixture to cool. When cooled, coat the 6 apple star pieces with the caramel.
- Remove the cores from the remaining bottom portions of the apples. Then, slice the apples into very thin circles and cut these circles in half. Layer the slices in a square baking dish until it is fully packed. In a mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup sugar, eggs, melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Then, incorporate the flour, salt, and baking powder into the mixture. Pour this batter over the apple slices and bake in the oven for 45 minutes at 350°F.
- Take the baked dish out of the oven, invert it onto a serving platter, and top with 6 scoops of vanilla ice cream. Arrange the caramel-coated apple stars atop the ice cream scoops and drizzle the remaining caramel over everything. Serve immediately and savor!
Notes
- Consider using a sugar substitute or reducing sugar in the batter for a healthier option.
- Experiment with different apple varieties to achieve varying levels of sweetness and tartness.
- Enhance flavor by sprinkling cinnamon or nutmeg over apple slices before adding the batter.
