Ingredients
- Salted butter, for the baking dish
- 8 medium baking apples (such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Braeburn; about 1.9 kg), peeled, cored, and sliced (1.92 kg)
- 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
- 1 c. granulated sugar
- 1 heaping Tbsp. all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
- 1 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 c. packed brown sugar
- 1 c. chopped walnuts
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- Pinch of kosher salt
- 8 tbsp. (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- Ice cream or warm caramel sauce, for serving
Instructions
- For the apples: Set your oven to 350°F and butter a 13-by-9-inch baking dish.
- Place the apple slices into the buttered dish. Pour lemon juice over them and mix well to ensure they are coated. Flatten the slices into a uniform layer.
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Scatter this blend over the apples and use your hands to mix until the apples are evenly covered.
- For the topping: In another bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, walnuts, baking powder, baking soda, and a pinch of salt.
- Add the melted butter and mix thoroughly. Spread this topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake in the oven until the topping becomes crispy and golden, approximately 55 to 60 minutes.
- Enjoy warm or at room temperature, either plain or with a scoop of ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Notes
- Use a combination of Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, and Braeburn apples for a well-rounded flavor and texture.
- Evenly coat the apple slices with lemon juice to prevent browning before assembling the crumble.
- Ensure the topping covers the entire surface of the apples to create a crispy, delicious layer.
