Description

Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with our simple apple crumble recipe. Learn how to create a warm, cinnamon-spiced dessert that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • Salted butter, for the baking dish
  • 8 medium baking apples (such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Braeburn; about 1.9 kg), peeled, cored, and sliced (1.92 kg)
  • 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 c. granulated sugar
  • 1 heaping Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 8 tbsp. (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • Ice cream or warm caramel sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. For the apples: Set your oven to 350°F and butter a 13-by-9-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the apple slices into the buttered dish. Pour lemon juice over them and mix well to ensure they are coated. Flatten the slices into a uniform layer.
  3. In a medium-sized bowl, combine granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Scatter this blend over the apples and use your hands to mix until the apples are evenly covered.
  4. For the topping: In another bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, walnuts, baking powder, baking soda, and a pinch of salt.
  5. Add the melted butter and mix thoroughly. Spread this topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake in the oven until the topping becomes crispy and golden, approximately 55 to 60 minutes.
  7. Enjoy warm or at room temperature, either plain or with a scoop of ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

  • Use a combination of Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, and Braeburn apples for a well-rounded flavor and texture.
  • Evenly coat the apple slices with lemon juice to prevent browning before assembling the crumble.
  • Ensure the topping covers the entire surface of the apples to create a crispy, delicious layer.
