Description
Caramelized onions, melted cheese, and crusty bread make for a warm and comforting classic French onion soup.
Ingredients
- 4 large onions, sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup white wine
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 loaf of French bread, sliced
- 1 ½ cups grated Gruyere cheese
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
Instructions
- Melt the butter with the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and stir occasionally, cooking until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
- Once the onions are golden, incorporate the wine, scraping the bottom to deglaze.
- Pour in the beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper; let the soup simmer for about 20 minutes.
- While the soup simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the minced garlic on the bread slices and bake until golden.
- Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top with a slice of toasted bread, and sprinkle Gruyere cheese generously.
- Broil the bowls until the cheese bubbles and is golden brown.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
For added flavor, consider garnishing with fresh herbs or a sprinkle of ground nutmeg.
