Ingredients

  • 600 g (21.2 oz) Apples peeled and chopped
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) Almond butter spread
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) Lemon juice
  • 60 g (2.1 oz) Raw cane sugar
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) Allspice
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) Cornflour (also known as cornstarch)
  • 175 g (6.2 oz) All-purpose flour
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) Raw cane sugar
  • 115 g (4 oz) Unsalted butter
  • 45 g (1.6 oz) Almond biscuits crushed

Instructions

  1. Set your oven to 180°C Fan/350°F/Gas Mark 4.
  2. In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour with the raw cane sugar.
  3. Add chunks of unsalted butter to the bowl, and using your fingertips, blend it with the flour and sugar until it looks like breadcrumbs. A food processor can also be used for this step if desired.
  4. Mix in the crushed almond biscuits.
  5. Place the lemon juice in a separate bowl. As you peel and slice the apples, toss them in the lemon juice to prevent discoloration.
  6. Once all apples are ready, incorporate the raw cane sugar, cornstarch, ground cinnamon, and allspice, then mix well.
  7. Transfer the apple mixture to a baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  8. Dot the almond butter spread over the apples using a spoon.
  9. Distribute the crumble mixture on top, ensuring an even layer.
  10. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the contents are bubbling.
  11. Serve right away with custard, cream, or ice cream.
  12. Once cooled, store the dessert in the refrigerator for up to three days, or freeze in portions.

Notes

  • For a healthier option, use maple syrup or honey instead of raw cane sugar.
  • Experiment with cashew or peanut butter for a unique flavor.
  • Add rolled oats to the crumble mixture for extra texture.
