Description

A classic Salisbury steak recipe featuring ground beef patties topped with rich mushroom-onion gravy, perfect for family gatherings or comforting dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1/4 cup of breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt
  • Lots of fresh ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon of cooking oil (for searing beef patties)
  • 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 medium sliced onion
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 cloves of minced or crushed garlic
  • 1/4-1/2 cup of flour (depending on how thick you like your gravy)
  • 3 cups of broth (beef, chicken, or vegetable)
  • Kosher salt (to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic salt, mustard powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Ensure all ingredients blend well.
  2. Shape the mixture into four oval patties, ensuring they hold their form.
  3. Heat a large pan over medium-high heat and add cooking oil. Sear each patty for about a minute on each side until browned. Remove the patties from the pan.
  4. In the same pan, add the sliced mushrooms and onions to the beef juices. Cook for about 10 minutes or until the onions turn golden and the excess mushroom liquid evaporates.
  5. Add butter and minced garlic to the pan, cooking for about one minute until fragrant.
  6. Stir in the flour, ensuring there are no lumps, then whisk in about 1/2 to 1 cup of broth until combined.
  7. Increase the heat to high and slowly pour in the remaining broth, whisking until well combined. Season with kosher salt and black pepper, adjusting to taste.
  8. Once the gravy simmers, reduce the heat to low. Stir occasionally and let it thicken for about 5-10 minutes.
  9. Return the Salisbury steak patties to the gravy and ensure they cook to your preferred doneness. This usually takes about 5-10 minutes.
  10. Serve the steaks topped with the rich mushroom-onion gravy over rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes.

Notes

For a thicker gravy, adjust the amount of flour according to preference. Serve over mashed potatoes or pasta for a delightful meal.
