Ingredients

  • – 1 lb (454 g) lean ground beef
  • – 2 tablespoon (30 ml) all-purpose flour
  • – 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth
  • – 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) kosher salt
  • – 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) ground black pepper
  • – 1 teaspoon (5 ml) garlic powder
  • – 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • – 5 oz (142 g) shredded sharp cheddar
  • – 6 brat or sausage rolls (or other sandwich rolls)
  • – 6 slices beef bacon
  • – 4 tablespoon (60 ml) ketchup
  • – 1 cup (240 ml) tomatoes, chopped
  • – 1½ cups (150 g) iceberg lettuce, shredded
  • – 4 tablespoon (60 ml) yellow mustard
  • – ¼ cup (60 g) sliced pickles
  • – ¼ cup (60 ml) mayonnaise
  • – ¼ cup (60 ml) barbecue sauce
  • – 1 teaspoon (5 ml) onion powder
  • – 1 tablespoon (15 ml) apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ingredients for the cheeseburger sub toppings.
  2. Toast or heat the rolls and make a slit along one side. Remove any excess bread from inside, if preferred.
  3. Combine the ingredients for the special sauce in a small bowl and apply to both sides of the rolls.
  4. Fry the bacon in a large pan over medium heat until it reaches your preferred crispness. Let it drain on a kitchen towel or paper bag, then discard the bacon fat.
  5. Clean the pan and cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it into small bits. Once the liquid has evaporated, mix in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Pour in the beef broth and stir, scraping the bottom of the pan, for 3 minutes.
  7. Incorporate the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce, and continue cooking for another 3 minutes.
  8. Mix in the cheese until it melts, then set the beef mixture aside.
  9. Stuff each roll with the beef filling, add bacon and any additional toppings you like. Serve right away.

Notes

  • Consider using ground turkey or chicken for a healthier twist on this recipe.
  • Experiment with various cheeses to elevate the flavor profile.
  • Enhance the special sauce with hot sauce or jalapeños for a spicy kick.
