Ingredients
- – 2 lb / 1 kg Granny Smith Apples (green apples), weight before peeling
- – 1 tbsp (15 ml) flour, plain / all-purpose
- – 1/2 cup (120 ml) brown sugar
- – 2 tbsp (30 ml) lemon juice (or water)
- – 1/2 tsp (3 ml) ground cinnamon
- – 1 cup (240 ml) rolled oats / oatmeal (quick cooking is ok)
- – 1 cup (240 ml) flour, plain / all-purpose
- – 1 cup (240 ml) (loosely packed) white sugar
- – 1/2 tsp (3 ml) baking powder
- – 1 tsp (5 ml) cinnamon powder
- – 125 g / 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- – Pinch of salt
- – Vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- Set your oven to 180°C / 350°F, suitable for both fan and conventional settings.
- Apples – Remove the skin from the apples and slice them into cubes approximately 1.5cm/½” in size.
- Apple mixture – Add the apple pieces to a mixing bowl. Dust them with flour, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon, then drizzle with lemon juice. Stir to coat evenly, then distribute them uniformly in a 1.5 litre/1.5 quart baking dish.
- Crumble layer – Combine all the topping components in a separate bowl. Stir until small clusters form, resembling damp sand. Scatter this mixture over the apples, using your fingers to achieve a crumbly texture if needed.
- Cook for 30 to 40 minutes or until the top is a rich golden hue. Once done, remove it from the oven, lightly cover with foil to retain warmth, and let it sit for 10 minutes, allowing the apple juices to thicken a bit.
- Enjoy while warm, complemented by a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
Notes
- To achieve a crispy crumble topping, use cold butter and blend it with dry ingredients until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
- Try swapping some white sugar with honey or maple syrup for a healthier alternative in the crumble topping.
- Experiment with various apple varieties like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady for a unique flavor twist in your apple crumble.
