Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar (200g)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil, melted (113g)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 medium apples – peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (65g)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to warm up and lightly coat a 9×9-inch baking pan with oil or butter.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sugar, melted oil, and egg using an electric mixer until the mixture becomes light and airy.
  3. Gently mix in the sliced apples and chopped walnuts.
  4. In another bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon, then gradually incorporate this into the apple mixture until just combined.
  5. Pour the prepared batter into the greased baking pan, spreading it out evenly.
  6. Place in the oven and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, approximately 35 minutes.

Notes

  • For a healthier option, substitute whole wheat flour for all-purpose flour without sacrificing taste.
  • Experiment with pecans or almonds for added crunch and flavor.
  • Enhance sweetness by drizzling honey or maple syrup on top of the baked apple walnut bars before serving.
